HAPPY HOLIDAYS FROM CAT GRANT
My New Holiday Traditions
The holidays have been much different in my house since my husband passed away in 2009. The first couple of years after being widowed were … well, pretty dismal. But I’ve since learned that Christmas is about what’s in your heart, rather than what goes on around you. So I’ve set myself to keeping busy writing during this potentially difficult time, as well as starting some new holiday traditions of my own.
My living room isn’t that big, so I usually put up this cute little table-top tree. (Actually, I keep it up year-round, and just turn on the lights after Thanksgiving!) Yes, that’s King Kong at the top, batting away airplanes. There’s also a Captain Picard ornament, and a King Moonracer ornament (from the American holiday TV special Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer) down at the bottom. Every year I try to add one more geek-related ornament. It puts a smile on my face when I’m sitting on the couch writing or watching TV.
The last couple of years my good friend and fellow author EM Lynley’s been driving down to spend the holidays with me. She’s a much better cook than I am, so I buy the food and she cooks it for us. Last Christmas we had an amazing roast chicken with homemade stuffing and sautéed carrots with olives. Oh, and the best pinot noir ever – Cherry Pie pinot from California. If you get the chance to try this wine, jump at it. It’s so delicious, we had an extra glass for dessert!
Here’s the link to the stuffing recipe:

We substituted raisin pumpernickel bread for the white bread, pork sausage for the turkey sausage and doubled up on the apples. It turned out great! In fact, we had so much left over, we ate the rest for breakfast the next morning.
Afterwards, we curled up on the couch watching The Nightmare Before Christmas until we conked out. Pretty fun holiday, huh?
This year, however, will be a bit different – and more joyous – now that I have someone new to share it with. EM’s coming to cook, but this time she’ll be feeding me, her, my girlfriend Tyrrell, her three roommates and her mom. It’ll be a tight squeeze in my small apartment, but I can’t wait to have an honest-to-God holiday party again. J
And here’s the Christmas gift that keeps giving year-round – my sweet little boy Timothy, holding my robe and slippers hostage.

I love your tree! i wondered what that was sitting at the top. Made me laugh. There can’t be many who have king kong rather than a fairy or an angel or a star! LOL I keep a tree out all year too, It’s a fibre optic one and always cheers me up. One ornament on it, a glass flamingo. I hope you have a wonderful Christmas meal with all your friends!
Thanks for stopping by. A very Merry Christmas to you and yours! 🙂
I love the idea of a ‘Geeky’ tree. If it gives you pleasure, all to the good. 😀 I hope you and your pals have a wonderful Christmas and your new traditions carry on for many happy holidays to come. 😊
I always get a lot of responses whenever I post pics of my geeky Xmas tree. It’s so soothing, looking up from the couch to see the lights twinkling.
First time I ever saw King Kong at Christmas, you might have a new tradition in that 😉 Have a Ho Ho Ho!
KK was actually my late husband’s idea, but everybody seems to get a kick out of it. 🙂
Lovely to read about your new traditions! Change, especially around family holidays, can be a scary business, so it’s really heartening to hear about you and your new family.
And I love the geekmas tree! 😀
Thanks! It brings me a lot of good cheer. 🙂
Love your tree. One year, I had Godzilla on mine. This year the space shuttle. Merry Christmas!
Hm. I have a little Godzilla I should try to fit on there somewhere. Thanks for the idea! 🙂
Love the tree! I think its important that they reflect the home – ours is a colourful mishmash!
Hope you and all your guests have a great time
My house is a fannish mini-museum, so the tree fits in perfectly. 🙂
That is a wonderful tree. Love your King Kong and Picard. Setting new traditions is important and I hope you will have a lovely Christmas this year with your friends.
There’s a Millennium Falcon on there somewhere, too. Thanks for stopping by! 🙂
I would have never thought of a King Kong tree-topper. That’s the best!
Thanks! People get a big kick out of KK. 🙂
Some excelent decorations and traditions there.
Thanks for stopping by! And what a cute kitty in your icon! 🙂
I hope your Christmas gathering is filled with warmth and laughter. Your tree decorations are whimsical and fun.
Thanks for stopping by. Merry Christmas!
I’m so sorry about your husband–this’ll be the first Christmas without my dad, and my mom and I aren’t sure what to expect. Your ornaments sound excellent!
It’s rough the first year after losing a loved one, but you’ll get through it. *hugs*
It will be the first year for my mom and sister without my dad. I’m not sure what to expect either. We survived Thanksgiving though so I guess we can get through the rest of the year. One thing I know for sure, we will all miss him very much.
*hugs*
It sounds like you will have a fun time with loved ones! Happy holidays!
You too! Thanks for stopping by! 🙂
Timothy is beautiful.

And he knows it, too! He’s quite the charmer. 🙂
Timothy is adorable. He’d make a great Christmas card 🙂

He’s very photogenic, isn’t he? 🙂
Your tree is magnificent. Am ridiculously jealous of your Captain Picard ornament.
There’s a Millennium Falcon on the other side of the tree, too. 🙂
Yeah, yeah, rub it in…
I think the best Christmas traditions are the ones you find on your own.
Love the king kong.
Everything on that table looks so scrumptious! I’m glad EM will be coming back to celebrate the holidays with you! Happy Holidays Cat!

Congrats on the new release! I love that I’m not the only one that eats and reads! 😉

Have a great time. What’s this year’s ornament?
Aw, your kitty looks like our kitty! Except not as ornery. 🙂
