  1. Erastes,
What is really great about this list is that it pretty much includes ALL gay fiction published prior to 1957, because even though it may have been contemporary at the time, it qualifies as historical now. Going through the list I’m amazed at how many early gay lit books there are that I didn’t know about. I don’t know it is possible that all this time I knew nothing of the Mary Renault books and such groundbreaking literature as “The Bitterweed Path” by Thomas Hal Phillips. I’ve got a lot of catching up to do.

    • Not really. There are literally hundreds of Pulp Fiction Novels bordering on literary classics that could and should be include in this list. Where is Quatrefoil?

  2. Thanks Mark. I wondered if I should go the same route as the Historical Novel Society and only consider “historical” to mean contemporarily written but based in years pre-world war 2 but I decided that that would really limit the list seeing as how few people are actually writing it nowadays.

You MUST read the Charioteer. Must Must Must.

  3. very interesting, but I don’t agree with you
    Idetrorce

  4. *laughs*

You don’t agree with a list?

  5. From my own collection (with apologies if I have duplicated)
Ben Elliot – The slave king
Robert Musil – The confusions of young Torless
    Jane Yolen – Briar Rose
    Edward Prime-Stevenson – Imre
    Forman Brown – Better Angel
    Christopher Harris – Theodore
    Catherine Jinks – The Notary
    Mark Merlis – Arrow’s flight
Anne Rice – Cry to heaven
Louis Bayard – Pale Blue Eyes
PV Goode – Barbwire entanglements (if you have trouble tracking this try thebookshop.com.au)
    Antha Ingham – Sebastian’s tangibles
    Stephen Spender – The temple
    Caleb Carr – The alienist
Nicholas Drayson – Confessing a murder
Rudi van Dantzig – For a lost soldier
    JM Roberts – Without sanction

    Can I throw in (non-fiction)
    The gay canon (Robert Drake)
The men with the pink triangle (Heinz Heger)
Camping by a billabong (Robert French)

    and just for fun
Michael Alvear – Alexander the fabulous

  6. The 20th Century Surrealist artists/lovers/Resistance propagandists Claude Cahun/Lucille Schwob and Marcel Moore/Suzanne Malherbe are receiving some much-deserved attention. Cahun’s photos and photocollages, “Claude Cahun,” are now available. A bigger book “Don’t Kiss Me, I am in Training,” is harder to find. My book, in which they figure prominently, “War on the Margins,” is available on Kindle and will soon be out in paperback. Barbara Hammer’s film, “Lover/Other,” is terrific.

  7. Unless I’ve missed it somewhere, I don’t find Maria McCann’s “As Meat Loves Salt” on the list. It should surely be there. Set during the Civil War in 17th England, it has fine historical detail, vivid characters and a description of erotic obsession between men that is especially stunning given that the author is a woman. This is her first novel. With luck it won’t be her last.

  8. Yep – it’s there, John! Together with a review. One of the best books in the genre.

Most m/m writers these days are women, me included!

  9. Never read Frontiers, by Michael Jensen, even for a review. There’s a copy in our glba office, and sometimes I think it can’t be as bad as I thought it was… and then it is. I can’t make it past the first chapter, it’s so bad.

  10. hi–i saw your discussion thread on amazon; you might consider BRANWELL (Douglas A. Martin). thanks for this.

  11. Oh – that does look interesting, thank you Douglas!

  12. [...] The List – the above-referenced blog compiles a list of fiction with gay characters. Be advised that it consists of fiction in many genres, including historical romance and erotica. [...]

  13. Two books I have recently ordered in paperback are –
    Heart of a Lion – Kira Stone – Samhainpublishing.com
    Golden Boots – A. Jane – ajanefantasy.com

I have not read them yet. However I dont think they are on your list.

Since you gave me the link to this web page I have been reading so many fantastic books including your recent book Frost Fair – I cant wait for transgressions i have it on pre-order with amazon. A Big thank you to you Erastes. Adam xxx

  14. Thank you, Adam, and thanks (blushingly) for your very kind words. Getting praise is nice, from a man is doubly nice.

I wasn’t sure about Kira Stone’s book, although I had spotted it before, as there’s no way I can tell what era/country its in, so I assumed it was fantasy – can you enlighten me as to when and where it’s set? Golden Boots, sadly, is fantasy, so I can’t include it here – but thank you for both suggestions!

  15. Apologies if i’ve missed the point.

    Querelle Of Brest: Jean Genet

Jade In Aries: Tucker Coe, 1960’s NYC

    Quatrafoil: James Barr

There are others but my collection has been boxed up. i’ll submit more when i next move the boxes.

  16. Thank you, Ben – I will add these asap!

  17. Hi Erastes,

Just wanted to let you know that my novel The Soldier of Raetia is no longer a WIP — it can still be read online, starting with the intro post (http://teacake421.livejournal.com/34008.html), but it’s also available in e-book and paperback (http://www.lulu.com/content/paperback-book/the-soldier-of-raetia/7436547). Thanks for including me in your list! :)
